In the majority of work situations, effective listening skills greatly aid communication and problem solving. On this programme students develop effective listening skills as well as ethical and professional approaches to helping others.

Graduates from this programme are not trained as therapeutic counsellors but gain a balance of knowledge, skills and personal awareness to equip them to work in a wide variety of people orientated careers; enhancing students' ability to be ethically mindful in their primary role; to communicate effectively and facilitate problem solving in others.

Feedback from students emphasise increased levels of self-awareness, recognising how their personal values and beliefs influence their interaction with others.They see changes taking place in how they relate to others and often comment that these changes have a positive impact on relationships.

Features:

Provides students with knowledge and practical skills that can be applied across a wide range of careers. Facilitates students to become effective, ethical and professional decision makers. Utilises group work and structured exercises to facilitate individual learning and develop self-awareness. There are no 'exams'on this programme.

Programme Stucture:

A combined honours degree programme to be taken with another programme, enabling students to create a course of study for their individual needs.

Level 4 (Year 1)

Developing Counselling Skills and Ethical issues in the Helping Relationship

These modules provide students with a clear understanding of the nature of counselling skills and how they may be applied in an ethical and professional manner.

Level 5 (Year 2)

Professional Counselling Skills in Context and Managing Aversity, transition and Change.

These modules encourage students to develop a broad theoretical base of knowledge and understanding of how individuals may develop over the life span together with the possible consequences of adversity and loss. Students develop practical skills and deeper levels of self-awareness in order to facilitate effective helping relationships.

Level 6 (Year 3)

Using Counselling Skills in the Workplace, this is the core module in which students further develop their knowledge and deployment of skills into an area of specific career interest.

Students have the opportunity to to major, minor or take equal weighting at level 6. The route they take will inform their choice of modules.

Working with Trauma and Loss and Developing Multicultural Competence are optional modules. Students also have the opportunity to to research a related topic of particular interest with a Dissertation.

Group presentations, practical portfolios, poster presentations, written assignments, case studies, evaluation of helping sessions, audio-taped helping sessions.

Graduates from Counselling Skills can offer added value to any organisation which is people orientated.

  • Teaching and some of our students go on to train as Therapeutic Counsellors

OCR: OCR National Extended/Diploma: merit/distinction profile
