Digital photography is one of the most dynamic mediums within the creative industries; it has become one of the dominant forces in shaping and defining contemporary society. Demand for the visual is at an optimum and never before has so much power been given to the single image within our culture. 

This programme is designed to give the students an essential understanding of the national and international photographic arena.

Why study this course:

This programme is designed for students who wish to pursue a career within digital photography and those who may simply wish to develop a more in depth understanding of the power and reach of the photographic image through the practical application of photographic skills. It aims to provide each student with a core skills-base of the digital photographic industry and explores the dynamic between critical and contemporary practice.

Throughout the course these skills will be built upon to give you a full and rounded understanding of the contemporary photographic world. It is specifically designed to build your comprehension of the subject over three years and equip you with a fundamental understanding of skills that are essential for a successful career in digital photography.

This programme also aims to provide each student with the ability to access the core revenue making avenues within photography. In short, the course provides a realistic approach to working within this highly competitive and creative industry.

The Digital Photography programme at Warrington develops exemplary technical skills alongside an exploration and understanding of critical and historical issues involved in the image making process. Modules will be delivered through a combination of weekly seminars, intensive workshops and online teaching reflecting communication methods used in the modern industry.

We aim to produce technically competent, professionally aware and critically confident graduates who are capable of directly entering the profession.

Features:

Students are given support to develop a range of skills in digital photography in order to produce a portfolio of individual work across a range of photographic disciplines. This will be underpinned by the finessing of skills and knowledge in lighting, shooting and postproduction leading to the production of work that will evidence your abilities to potential commissioners in the creative world.

Students work in a range of genres including photojournalism, advertising, PR and publishing and respond to a range of potential outlets and commissioners such as advertising agencies, picture agencies, magazines and newspapers. You will quickly begin to develop a personal approach to your work and also begin to explore your future in terms of work beyond the classroom.

Facilities are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Alongside the practical aspects of the programme students will undertake a range of critical and contextual modules, which aim to develop an informed global perspective on the industry and your potential to succeed in it.

The programme is delivered at the Warrington campus, however, you will be expected to produce work on and off campus and will have opportunity to develop skills and experience locally, nationally or internationally through the Work Based Learning module.

The first year (Level 4)

Lays the groundwork for you to be able to work professionally and independently. It introduces you to the essential practical skills of digital photography and establishes an understanding within the fields of documentary photography and photojournalism.

Modules may include Introduction to Photographic Practice, Practical Photographic Fundamentals, Introduction to Digital Applications, Critical/Historical Photographic Fundamentals and Documentary Photography and Photojournalism.

In Year 2 (Level 5)

We will develop the skills and creativity required to work in the photographic industry. It will introduce you to core areas within the global photographic economy and, equally, the issues facing freelancers in this expanding market. Modules may include Advanced Photographic Practice, Advanced Digital Applications, Critical Analysis of the Image Economy, Photography in the Commercial World: Picture Agencies and Photographic Commissions and Work Based Learning.

Your final year (Level 6)

Will be carried out in a highly professional working environment. Its aim is to equip you with the skills and expertise to enable you to pursue a career within photography. You will work on self-initiated and directed projects where you must develop and manage professional photographic assignments, understand the complexity of the creative and photographic economy in which your work would appear, and appreciate the need for comprehensive research, planning and budgets.

You will also have the opportunity to further develop your critical skills through the writing of a dissertation. Modules may include: Personal Practical Project, Industrial, Advertising, PR and Publishing, Photography and the Web, Portfolio Building and Exhibiting, and Dissertation.

You will be formally assessed in a variety of ways throughout the programme to allow you to evidence your emerging talent and your understanding of the industrial context for your work and that of others.

There is a mixture of practical and written coursework, some examinations, seminar presentations, and a dissertation. Staff will be available throughout to give formal and informal developmental feedback on all your work.

The programme combines an effective range of knowledge and skills designed to enable you to gain work in the creative industries, particularly the photographic industries and to commence professional practice.

Graduates acquiring a range of key specific and transferable skills will open up a wealth of opportunity across the broad range of creative industries and, more specifically, in the photographic arena.

As such, opportunities would exist in commercial outlets such as newspapers and magazines, photo and advertising agencies, and within studio photography, photojournalism, and the publishing world.
