The BA (Hons) Health and Social Care is a single honours programme and is offered to both full and part-time students.

Why study this programme at Univeristy of Chester?

The programme is aimed at helping you understand how society identifies and deals with health and social care issues. This exciting new degree is for people who have an interest in health and social care issues and who wish to work in diverse environments.

This programme is delivered at the Riverside Campus in Chester.

Programme Structure:

Year 1 (Level 4)

All the modules in Year 1 are core and have been selected to provide a coherent and challenging learning experience, as well as providing a sound basis for Years 2 and 3 study.
Subject areas studied include:

  • An introduction to health and social care
  • Law and policy
  • Interpersonal Skills in Health and Social Care
  • Developing study skills and professionalism

Year 2 (Level 5)

Emphasis at this level is placed on the context of health and social care policy developments, engagement in developing strategic solutions, recognising and valuing diversity and difference. Core subject areas include:

  • Equality and diversity in health and social care
  • Safeguarding vulnerable people
  • Interdisciplinary and Partnership Working
  • Health and Social Care Research Methodologies
  • Work Based Learning

Work Based Learning (WBL)

Work Based Learning (WBL) is an opportunity for students to apply the knowledge and skills they have gained during their degree studies to the work setting. It is expected that WBL will be an integral part of the Year 2 programme for most students. 

A wide choice of placements is available and students may opt for a placement directly relevant to their intended career. Normally, the WBL Office staff arrange the placements with local employers although students may, with the agreement of the WBL staff, make their own arrangement where this is appropriate

Year 3 (Level 6)

This level focuses on the potential impact health and social care has in reducing the incidence of disease in populations, improving the quality of life of individuals and reducing inequalities in vulnerable groups. Core subject areas studied include:

  • Health and Social Care Dissertation
  • Leadership and management in health and social care
  • Personal Development

The programme uses a wide portfolio of assessment methods, ranging from coursework assignments, seminars, presentations, examinations, and observation of communication skills.

In Health and Social Care, we aim to provide you with the kind of foundation and degree of choice that will provide an excellent grounding for career outlets in the statutory, voluntary or private sectors.
