Health Visiting - SCPHN

BSc (Hons) Pre-Registration Nursing progressing to MSc/PGD Specialist Community Public Health Nursing Health Visiting

Are you interested in becoming a Health Visitor?

The Department of Health is planning to increase the number of Health Visitors in the UK, and as a result two new opportunities have become available at the University of Chester for people wanting to achieve the Specialist Community Public Health qualification.

Campus Riverside
Course BSc (Hons) Pre-Registration Nursing progressing to MSc/PGD Specialist Community Public Health Nursing Health Visiting
Length 3 Years Full-time
Start dates September 2012
March 2013

Why study this course:

1. Newly qualified or soon-to-qualify nurses

If you have recently qualified as a registered nurse or are due to qualify soon, you can apply for the Health Visiting programme. This is a one-year full-time programme beginning in September and March each academic year. You will study the Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (SCPHN) programme, but unlike traditional applicants, you will not need experience of working in the community to apply for this programme. However, you will need to demonstrate an interest and understanding of the public health role of the health visitor. For more information about the programme, please refer to the SCPHN course information page.

 2. People with no previous nursing qualification

If you aren’t a registered nurse but would like to become a Health Visitor, you can apply for the three-year programme. This programme combines a two-year pre-registration nursing programme and the one-year Specialist Community Public Health – Health Visitor programme. At the end of the three years you will be a registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) as a nurse in the branch of your choice, and also be registered on the Specialist Community Public Health NMC register as a Health Visitor.

In order to access this programme you need the academic credits and experience equivalent to the first year of our standard pre-registration nursing programme. It is likely that you will have a degree, a foundation degree or a Dip/CertHE in a health-related area, and have significant experience of working in the care sector. You will also need GCSE Maths and English grade C or above, or an equivalent qualification. If you have Level 4 equivalent qualifications other than those listed above, but are still interested in applying for the programme, please contact Health and Social Care Admissions.

Features:

Bursaries available

Both programmes are funded by the Department of Health and students will be eligible for a bursary for the duration of the programme.
