Bursaries

The University provides bursaries to support students from low income households.

For 2009-10, students who are eligible for a full maintenance grant, with a household income of less than £25,000, will in addition be entitled to receive a University of Chester bursary of £1,000. This applies to undergraduates paying the full fee of £3,225.

How are they paid?

The bursary is paid to you directly and will normally be paid in three instalments: December £319 (mandatory minimum), February £340.50 and May £340.50. It will be administered and paid through the Student Loans Company (SLC) in a scheme approved by most universities.

Your eligibility for a bursary is assessed by means of your application for student support. It is therefore essential that you submit your application for student support to your local authority in good time.

Applications for funding can be made online and the website to use is dependant on where you live:

You can find general information on maintenance grants, maintenance loans and tuition fee loans at www.dfes.gov.uk/studentsupport.

Further information is also available at www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance.

For Foundation Degree students only, the tuition fee of £3,225 will normally be offset for full-time self-financing learners by a bursary of £1,940 (pro-rata for part time), applied as a fee waiver. Tuition fees payable will therefore normally be £1,285 per year for full-time self-financing learners (pro rata for part-time), but may vary in certain cases.

PGCE and undergraduate Social Work students who are eligible for a full maintenance grant, with a household income of less than £25,000, are eligible only for the mandatory minimum bursary of £319.

Course-related Bursaries

NHS Bursaries: Students studying for a health-related degree, i.e. nursing, midwifery or nutrition and dietetics, may be eligible for a bursary supplied by the NHS. The amount students receive will be based on their eligibility. In general terms, students must be accepted onto an NHS-funded course which leads to professional registration in a health-related career.

Further information please see the NHS Bursary Scheme.

Social Work Bursaries: The General Social Care Council (GSCC) provides bursaries to students studying approved degree courses in social work.

Further information can be found on the General Social Care Council website at www.gscc.org.uk or email your enquiry to bursaries@gscc.org.uk
