School Mentoring

The University of Chester has been running highly successful Mentoring Projects in High Schools since the year 2000.

We aim to provide Mentors for up to 120 young people across Cheshire each year - making a real difference to young people's lives.

All You Need to Know

The projects are delivered through Student Support and Guidance and part funded by Aimhigher.

Students from the University work with Year 10 or 11 Aimhigher target students in schools to help them become confident, successful, independent learners and to help raise their aspirations. Mentoring works so well because Mentors from the University of Chester provide young people with someone other than a parent, carer or teacher, to listen to any problems or concerns.

They can offer practical, unbiased, friendly advice; help with organisational skills and time management; help with school work, or study and revision skills; and help young people to explore their post GCSE options.

We currently work with: Bishop Bluecoat High School, Bishop Heber High School, Blacon High School, Catholic High School Chester, Cheshire Oaks High School, Ellesmere Port Specialist School for Performing Arts, Penketh High School and Queen's Park High School. Mentors must undergo an enhanced CRB check and a rigorous recruitment and training process to ensure that they are able to meet the demands of mentoring.

We aim to provide Mentors for up to 120 young people across Cheshire each year - making a real difference to young people's lives.

We also deliver the Aimhigher Associates scheme in Catholic High School Chester, Queen’s Park High School, Rudheath High School, Warrington Collegiate, West Cheshire College, and William Beamont High School. Student Associates work with young people in these schools and colleges, in group sessions looking at progression routes into Higher Education and in individual sessions designed to improve organisational and study skills, confidence and motivation.
