Bernadine has a background in Graphic Design, Multimedia and Fine Art and joined the University of Chester in Sept 2007.

Bernadine has been working at the University of Chester since 2007. With a background in graphic design, multimedia design and fine art, Bernadine’s creative industry experience includes: freelance graphic design; in-house graphic design; front and back end software development for educational games; graphic illustration and community arts. Since taking on the role of Programme Leader for the BA hons Graphic Design in 2008 she has been involved in the instigation and organisation of the annual faculty graduate day; developed links with Orita Sinclair School of Design in Singapore; has been a subject specialist for the validation of programmes delivered at other institutions; has acted as Department Representative for the Knowledge Transfer Management Group; Department Representative at Board of Studies; Department Representative for the Foundation Degree Advisory Group.


Bernadine’s teaching experience has been gained through a variety of programme leader, senior lecturer, lecturer and visiting lecturer posts, teaching theory, context and practice across art and design disciplines within a number of further and higher education institutions across the northwest at undergraduate and post graduate levels. Previous posts have focused on the development of multimedia programmes of study and the improvement of teaching and learning across a variety of art and design courses. Alongside her current responsibilities as Programme Leader she teaches on core and optional modules across all three levels of the Graphic Design Degree.


Education is at the heart of Bernadine’s academic research. At present she is studying for a Doctorate in Education with a focus on design pedagogy and the current and future role of social media within design education. Previous research includes the development, design and production of adult literacy software; incorporating user-centered design, human computer interaction and multimedia project management.  Bernadine’s creative practice explores the connection between line and language - written and spoken, how line evokes meaning and emotion, through rhythm, weight, shape and space, on a two dimensional plane.
