Dr Kate Litherland

Head of Academic Development and Enhancement

I work with staff and students to develop and share good practice and innovation in teaching and learning.  I am programme leader for the MA/PG Cert in Learning and Teaching in HE.  I also run CPD workshops on all aspects of teaching and learning.

Qualifications

BA Modern Language Studies (Leicester), PhD (Leicester), PGCE Further, Adult and Higher Education (Manchester Metropolitan University).

Overview

Before working in technology enhanced learning, I completed a PhD in Italian Studies and a short post-doc on the Italian media at the British School at Rome. I followed this with a number of part-time and sessional posts in Italian Studies before deciding to explore further my interests in technology and the media which had become an increasingly prominent theme in my earlier research. In 2011 I was appointed as a researcher on the Ensemble project (based at Liverpool John Moores University) which investigated the potential of 'semantic web' technologies to support teaching and learning in Higher Education. I remained at LJMU, working on Ensemble and a number of spin-off projects, until joining the LTI in 2013.  I was appointed as Head of Academic Development and Enhancement in 2017.

Teaching

I am module leader for the following modules:

  • Technology Enhanced Learning, Teaching and Assessment
  • Supporting HE Students and Assessing their Learning
  • Influences on Higher Education
  • Research Methods

Research

In my previous roles I was involved with technology enhanced learning projects in a variety of disciplines in higher, professional and compulsory education. I remain interested in educational technology developments with a participatory ethos, and in the theoretical framings of this work.
