Department of Natural Sciences

Studying physics or chemistry in the Department of Natural Sciences allows students to develop their technological and laboratory skills across a variety of scientific subject disciplines and prepares them with the theoretical framework to explore many of today’s real-life scientific and technological challenges.

It is a great pleasure to confirm that the Department of Natural Sciences offers a four-week full-time summer work placement for all first year students, during which students are paid £1,200.
Prof. Graham Smith

The Department of Natural Sciences is part of the Faculty of Science and Engineering. It is located at Thornton Science Park, a modern expressly-designed site that profits from a recently-completed multi-million pound renovation that has created a state-of-the-art teaching and research facility. The site was home to the Shell Research and Technology Centre since the 1940s, and its takeover by the University heralded the opportunity to apply its legacy to the continuation of world-class innovation and research in the North West.

Students benefit from world-class laboratories furbished with modern equipment and from the opportunity to undertake work experience with industrial and commercial partners. Our goal is to provide our students with professional skills and a unique educational experience in a friendly and supportive atmosphere, helping them develop the potential they need to become leaders in their scientific areas. In order to prepare our students for a successful career in the working environment, we further offer our innovative Work Based Learning module and the opportunity to undertake a four-week summer work placement at the end of the first year, during which our students are paid £1,200 as they work full-time on projects alongside members of staff and/or industrial experts.

Library facilities for the Physical Sciences are excellent, both on the Thornton engineering site and on the Chester Campus, where students have their accommodation and recreational facilities.  Our first year students qualify for guaranteed University accommodation. Transport to and from the Thornton site is provided by the University.

Staying loyal to our “no hidden costs” philosophy, the Faculty of Science and Engineering covers in full the following costs:

  • Core textbooks for the first year
  • Software licences provided for academic use
  • All PPE equipment provided by the Faculty
  • Lab coats, safety glasses, ear defenders, steel toe cap boots etc
  • UK field trips and other educational visits
  • Photocopying/Printing costs at annual allowance
  • Student membership of professional institutes

Students take part in field trips to locations such as Bletchley Park, Daresbury National Lab, and the Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre, providing educational experiences and insight outside their everyday activities. We also offer various opportunities for our students, who are looking to study abroad as part of their programme, or who are interested in our Experiential Overseas Learning scheme; for further information please follow the link here.

The University of Chester has a history of over 175-years of innovation and creativity in teaching and learning. Via our newly renovated facilities, we are committed to achieving excellence in research and ensuring employability for students registered on our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
