Popcorn and popular culture

Students in the Department of Social Studies and Counselling have the opportunity to join a staff-student film club, Social Screen, which takes place one Wednesday afternoon per month during term time.

Social Screen is an extra-curricular group organised by a voluntary student committee, which chooses popular films with relevance for degree programmes in the Social Sciences, with an emphasis on entertainment and topicality.

Each film is introduced briefly to highlight key themes and points of interest and is followed by a trip to the Students’ Union bar, where drinking and intellectual film-related conversation (sometimes) take place! This regular event provides an opportunity for relaxation away from formal study as well as a chance to meet fellow students and lecturers in an informal setting.

Much fun is had by all and students produce an informative (and often hilarious) newsletter to report on each month’s activities.
