Students take to the seas to learn more about tourism.

A group of students from the University of Chester is gaining first-hand invaluable experience of the business of the tourism industry through an exclusive partnership with Royal Caribbean International.

Seven second year students studying Tourism Management and related business subjects have joined the Royal Caribbean team for the whole of May. The group were chosen via a competitive selection process which took into account both their academic performance and interviews.  

The group are enjoying their experience as well as learning more about their chosen profession. 

Hannah Jarrett, said: "It began with a competitive interview process and it was a challenging experience being up against fellow university friends. Securing the internship gave me a high sense of achievement.  

“Since day one with the company, I have felt like part of the team and that throughout the business they are keen to get me involved with all aspects to facilitate our skills in the best way and to help me develop my marketing knowledge further." 

Laura Cuthbertson said: “I absolutely love my Trade Incentivisation internship! Royal Caribbean International are great to work for and the people are welcoming and supportive. 

“I am very grateful for the University of Chester and Royal Caribbean International for coming together to create this internship opportunity and feel very lucky to have been chosen to be a part of this amazing experience and work alongside this renowned, international company.”  

The students have each been given a project by a different area of the business with the support of a dedicated mentor. This is designed to provide them with a deep understanding of the Royal Caribbean brand and the wider industry.  

This is the second year of the partnership between the University and Royal Caribbean which was developed after months of planning between Ben Bouldin at Royal Caribbean and Dr Maeve Marmion from the University. 

It was inspired by a mutual professional interest in forging closer links between this key industry name and the University of Chester, in order to enable students to experience and understand different tourism roles. The internship will boost the skills and opportunities of the students and help bring the travel industry to life for them as part of their degree learning.
