Professor Nicholas Avis

Professor Nicholas Avis is Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Knowledge Transfer and Provost for Thornton Science Park campus. 


Nick joined the University in September 2013 as the Executive Dean for the new Faculty of Science and Engineering located at the newly acquired Thornton Science Park. In September 2016 he was appointed Provost of the Thornton Science Park campus and in September 2017 he was appointed as Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Knowledge Transfer.

Nick’s research interests include: interactive and real time visualization and virtual/augmented reality systems; computational steering; application acceleration using many-core devices, remote rendering; interactive grid middleware and visual analytics of social media data. He has previously been involved in image reconstruction and inverse problems associated with Electrical Impedance Tomography – the subject of his PhD whilst at Sheffield University.

He has been active in the construction of computer-based surgical simulators and scientific director of the award winning university spin out company MedaPhor Limited, involved in the creation and sale of haptically enabled medical simulators for medical ultrasound training. Nick has conducted many successful projects with both academic and industrial partners including JISC, HLRS, Electronics Visualization Lab, University of Chicago, Wuhan Technical University and Toyota Motor Corporation (Japan).

Nick is a member of the Engineering and Physical Sciences (EPSRC) peer review college and was previously a lay member of the Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board (PMETB) and the General Medical Council (GMC). Nick has completed the Entrepreneurial University Leadership Programme.
