Mr Brian Fitzpatrick

BSc (Manchester), MBA (Open) 

Brian joined the University of Chester as IT Systems Coordinator in 1995 and has held numerous roles within the University including, Director of CIT Services and Senior Executive Director of Learning and Information Services (LIS).


Brian studied Physics and Computer Science at Manchester Polytechnic during the mid-1980s and, combining his interest in electronics and computing, started work at Salford College of Technology as a development officer, specializing in the newly emerging area of computer networks.

After a number of years in developing networking and establishing a computer services department, he moved to Chester as an IT Systems Coordinator. He established a significant amount of the University’s computing environment as Director of CIT Services and also took over responsibility for Library, Graphics, Print and AV provision as Director of LIS in 2007.

Brian obtained an MBA with the Open University, specializing in Technology Strategy and Management. He also became Chief information Officer (CIO) for the University.

Brian has been central to a number of strategic University initiatives including developments at Warrington, Shrewsbury and the Thornton Science Park (TSP), where he helped establish the site and initial support for commercial clients.

In 2017, Brian took over overall responsibility of LIS, Estates and Facilities and Hospitality and Residential Services, as part of the Senior Management Team.

Brian has also been involved in a number of JISC projects, including eLearning Benchmarking and Pathfinder and was a Director of Net North West. He continues to play a significant role in ICT Strategy, Space and Resource Management, Information Management and Planning and Project Management.
