Faculty of Science and Engineering

Based at Thornton Science Park, the Faculty of Science and Engineering is located in a major research and innovation hub for the North West. Formerly the site of the Shell Research and Technology Centre, its takeover by the University has created the opportunity to apply the Centre’s legacy to the continuation of innovation and research in science and engineering in the North West.

Studentships in Low Carbon Research

The University of Chester is a proud delivery partner of the ERDF funded Eco-Innovation

Cheshire and Warrington. The Faculty of Science and Engineering has a number of three year PhD and one year Masters by Research studentships which attract a tax exempt stipend of £15,000 per annum, starting in September 2017. Led by SMEs in the Cheshire and Warrington areas, these projects are driving the transition to a lower carbon economy.

The Faculty has a highly collegiate approach to research which falls across traditional departmental boundaries.  Current research in energy storage, fuel cells, smart grids, sustainable processing and bioenergy is supported by superb facilities in analytical/surface science, software development, electronics and pilot scale process technology.

The current opportunities can be accessed at the UoC research jobs and Find-a-PhD website.

Our degrees in engineering and natural sciences are taught on site at Thornton using a strongly interdisciplinary teaching philosophy. We offer a range of stimulating and exciting courses in science, engineering and mathematics.

All our undergraduate degrees emphasise practical skills alongside theoretical knowledge to maximise the opportunities for our graduates. In the engineering subjects, we offer both three-year Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) degrees and also four-year integrated Master of Engineering (MEng) degrees. BSc degrees in Mathematics, Computer Science and Natural Sciences including physics and chemistry take three years.

The University of Chester is an energy responsible Academic Institution, ranked 41st out of 151 Universities in the 2016 People & Planet’s University League committed to high standards of environmental and ethical performance.
