Hannah’s story

Hannah Matthews (BA English with Creative Writing, age 26)

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Chester – so much so that I am returning in October to study for an MA.

I re-entered full-time education at the age of twenty-three when my son was only two years old. Upon receiving an offer of a place on my course, I see-sawed between feeling nervous and excited for weeks, and when I received an invitation to the Welcome Event for mature students, I was relieved at the prospect of meeting others in a similar situation.

I found the event very helpful as students from levels five and six were there to share their stories and provide an insight into university life. There was also the opportunity to join up with a mentor, which is a fantastic idea, and although I didn’t enter this scheme myself, I would recommend it if you feel you will need a bit of extra support during your time here.

On my particular course, I’ve found that the mature students tend to stick together, which has made my experience of university a less daunting one. I met five mature students taking the same course as me at the Welcome Event before I started my first year, and we are now all very firm friends and will stay in touch beyond university. I have also met some lovely non-mature students (and by this I do not mean immature!), who have made me feel included both inside and outside of the classroom.

I had no idea what to expect when I began university and was especially nervous of handing in my first assignments, but Chester offers a wide range of helpful services, such as a Personal Academic Tutor, and I have taken full advantage of mine over all three years of my study. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Chester – so much so that I am returning in October to study for an MA.
