Emily Weygang

Biography

I am a registered social worker and a qualified and active Practice Educator. I have a varied practice experience which includes youth justice, in both Young Offender Institutions and the Youth Offending Service, child protection, child sexual exploitation and mental health. I have experience in both the statutory and voluntary sector. I have been a Senior Lecturer at the University since 2020 and am now Programme Lead for the Masters programme.

Teaching and Supervision

I have been teaching in different capacities for the past 25 years. I taught various courses including South African Literature and post-colonial literature at the Centre for Continuing Education; I have taught young people in prison and have taught English Literature at University. Since coming to Chester I have taught across all the programmes and have led a variety of modules. I am currently supervising MA student dissertations.

Research and Knowledge Exchange

My current research is on feminism and radical social work. I have co-led a research project with the University of Manchester on the relationship between curiosity and mental health. I am interested in critical approaches to social work, mental health services and service user movements as well as progressive social work within the voluntary sector.
