Initial Teacher Education Courses

At Chester we offer a number of routes into teaching.  If you are a graduate looking to train as a teacher, we currently offer the one-year PGCE and School Direct routes to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), as well as a Postgraduate Certificate in Early Years Practice with Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS). Alternatively our three-year BA (Hons) QTS course might be for you if you are looking for an undergraduate course that qualifies you as either an Early Years or Primary school teacher.  Whichever route you choose, your learning experience at Chester will be a highly supportive one that gives you the best possible chance of becoming an outstanding teacher.

Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)

A postgraduate university and placement-based programme offering:

  • Study modules based at the University of Chester and placements at school
  • Support and expertise from a University tutor
  • Experienced school-based mentors offering advice and support
  • 60 Masters level credits if you want to pursue further study
PGCE Primary/Early Years (3-7 Years) PGCE Primary (5-11 Years) PGCE Secondary

PGCE School Direct and School Direct (Salaried)

A postgraduate school-led training programme offering:

  • A school-led route into teaching
  • Earn a salary as you train if you have more than three years of career experience
  • Training in outstanding schools
  • Blend intensive experience and postgraduate study to help you begin your teaching career

Postgraduate Certificate in Early Years Practice with Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS)

A postgraduate university and work or placement-based Early Years programme offering:

  • Develop the quality of practice with babies and children aged 0-5 years
  • Supports the development of your critical reflective skills alongside your leadership and management skills
  • Allows for award of Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS) by the National College of Teaching and Leadership
  • Progression routes available to MA programmes
Postgraduate Certificate in Early Years Practice (0-5 Years)

BA (Hons) Teacher Education with QTS

An undergraduate university and placement-based programme offering:

  • Study modules based at the University of Chester and placements at school
  • Support and expertise from University tutors
  • Professional placements in at least four partnership schools or settings
  • Input from a variety of outside experts and conferences
Teacher Education: Early Years - Primary Education (3-7) with QTS Teacher Education: Primary Education (5-11) with QTS Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) Assessment Only

Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) Courses

These courses are designed for graduates who wish to teach secondary shortage subjects, but have a degree in a subject other than the one they wish to teach.
