Why Chester?

If you think you have the right qualities to become an exceptional teacher, why not apply for a place at the University of Chester?  As one of the first purpose built teacher training colleges in the country, the University of Chester is the ideal place to realise your teaching ambitions.  We’ll give you the freedom and support to develop into a highly employable teacher who has the ability to inspire and develop the next generation and make a real difference to young people’s lives, helping them to progress in their learning.

Reputation and quality

Founded in 1839, the University of Chester has been training teachers now for over 175 years.  Whilst it’s one of the oldest higher education institutions in the UK, it is also one of the country’s most forward thinking, successful and innovative universities with a well-deserved reputation for the quality of its training.  Chester is one of the few providers remaining in the north-west still to be graded 'Outstanding' by Ofsted. (Ofsted Report 2016).

Exceptional support

Chester offers a high quality teacher training experience in a supportive and friendly learning environment.  With highly qualified and experienced staff dedicated to ensuring you receive the best possible training, we’ll prepare you to be the kind of teacher who can make a real difference in the classroom.  We also have an award winning student support team, meaning you’ll have the best possible chance of succeeding.

Outstanding placements

Placements enable you to apply what you have learnt and gain real hands-on experience at being a teacher.  Occasionally you might find this to be a little challenging, however it’s likely that you’ll also find this to be one of the most rewarding aspects of your training.

Our students highly value the quality of their placements so we work hard to develop strong links with schools, colleges and Local Authorities across the region to ensure we’re able to provide a diverse range of placements.  We currently have 266 primary schools and 49 secondary schools working in partnership with us delivering bespoke training placements tied to our students’ interests and developmental needs.

You’ll have the opportunity to develop your teaching skills in a wide variety of contexts, giving you a breadth of experience that prepares you for the challenges and rewards of a career in teaching.  This will help shape you into an outstanding teacher who is highly employable in an increasingly competitive job market.  In fact, successful placements have often resulted in an offer of full-time employment.  Last year alone, 80 Primary students and 40 Secondary students were subsequently employed at their placement school.

High Quality Training Programmes

Whether you opt for school-led training or university-led training, our initial teacher education courses will equip you with the skills needed to excel in the classroom.  With university staff engaged in a wide range of research activities, you’ll benefit from the expertise they’re able to pass on, meaning you’ll graduate as a teacher who is conversant with the latest teaching practices.  Regardless of what you want to teach, our Early Years, Primary and Secondary courses will enable you to develop the skills needed to be an exceptional teacher with the ability to engage young minds.

First-rate SKE courses

Chester also offers a number first-rate Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) courses.  So, if you’re a graduate looking to teach in a subject you’ve not actually graduated in, we can help you to develop your knowledge and expertise in this subject prior to your training starting. SKE courses currently offered at Chester include: Mathematics; French; and Computer Science.

In the words of our students...

Why don't more men teach?

Did you know men are currently underrepresented in the teaching profession?

At Chester, we’re keen to ensure that teaching is a profession that has equal representation.  Regardless of your gender, age, religion or ethnicity, we welcome applications from anybody with a keen interest to teach.
