"What truly made me feel at home was Chester’s large international community. I thought that the University would not just be a place of study, but a place that would take care of me and where I would belong."

What is your name and what did you study?

My name is Bella Hyde and I studied Acting BA (Hons).

Why did you choose Chester?

As an international student with limited travel experience, I found Chester to be the ideal place to study. The city is a manageable size, and the University is the same. However, there is always plenty to do and see. What truly made me feel at home was Chester’s large international community. I thought that the University would not just be a place of study, but a place that would take care of me and where I would belong.

Do you have any advice for someone who is thinking about a career in acting

My advice for anyone considering a career in the arts is to have a relentless drive. This industry is highly competitive, and the key to success lies in setting and achieving goals, both big and small, on a regular and consistent basis. It’s not just about talent, but about the determination to keep pushing forward.

What graduate role have you commenced? What area(s) are you working in and what does this entail day-to-day?

Currently, I’m furthering my education by pursuing a Master’s degree in Theatre and Performance at Queen Mary University of London. This course is a natural progression, building upon the solid foundation of skills and knowledge I acquired during my time at Chester.

How did your time at Chester prepare you for your current role?

The connections I made at Chester, specifically with the staff on my programme, allowed me to pursue higher education. I applied to Queen Mary at the recommendation of several of my lecturers, who have connections to the University. The skills I acquired during my undergraduate degree, including acting techniques both physically and vocally, as well as skills in presentation, writing, and networking, directly correlate with my current role.

Did you take part in any extracurricular activities, societies, or internships while studying?

My involvement in the University of Chester’s women’s lacrosse team for all three years, and as Vice-Captain in my second year, was more than just a sport. It was a platform to make friends and connections with people of all ages, backgrounds, and pursuits outside of my course. It also taught me valuable leadership and teamwork skills that I apply in my professional life.
