Research Excellence Framework (REF)
About the REF
The Research Excellence Framework (REF) is the UK’s system for assessing research in UK higher education institutions. The exercise is conducted through expert review in subject-based Units of Assessment. REF outcomes inform the allocation of quality-related research funding, provide accountability for public investment in research and offer evidence about the health and benefits of research across UK higher education.

University of Chester and REF2029
The University is preparing for REF2029 in accordance with the published requirements of the UK higher education funding bodies. Our approach is intended to support robust, transparent and equitable decision-making and an accurate account of the University’s research activity and achievements.
REF2029 policy and guidance continue to develop. The University will review its arrangements as further official guidance, panel criteria and working methods are published. Where there is any difference between information on this website and current REF policy, the latest official REF guidance takes precedence.

Code of Practice
A Code of Practice is required for institutions intending to participate in REF2029. It explains how key institutional decisions relating to the REF submission will be made, including the identification of contracts that contribute to the volume measure, the allocation of contracts to Units of Assessment and the selection of research outputs.
