"After graduating, we founded our own dance school, Dream Dance Studios, which we have been successfully running for 6 years. Our roles involve teaching a range of dance styles, choreographing for events and producing our own shows. "

Why did you choose Chester?

When we visited Creative Campus, Kingsway on the open day we were invited to watch a technique class. Most stayed for a short time but we watched the session right until the end. We were so fascinated by the movement quality of the dancers and the approach to training. When we returned on our audition day, the atmosphere was so welcoming. The audition just felt like a big dance class and the lecturers taught us how to think about dance in a completely new way. The sense of inspiration we had when we left our audition is the reason we chose to study dance at Chester.

What did you enjoy most about the course?

The variety the course offers, from developing technique, to exploring choreography and collaboration on projects. This created such a strong sense of community within the course. We learnt so much from one another, everyone brings their own strengths and unique style. The lecturers at Chester are highly specialised in their fields, and each offered something different which broadened our understanding of dance. We also had opportunities to learn other styles, such as urban and street from visiting professionals and have choreographers come in to create a piece with us, which was really exciting for everyone and helped us to grow as artists.

Do you have any advice for someone who is thinking of studying your subject?

Our advice is to come with an open mind every day, and be ready to step outside your comfort zone. Not only will studying dance improve your technique, you will explore new ways of moving and thinking. Be prepared to work hard and take as many opportunities as you can. Learn from everyone around you, whether they are student or professional! Be kind to yourself and try not to compare yourself to others, you are on your own unique journey as an artist.

What graduate role have you commenced and what does it entail?

After graduating, we founded our own dance school, Dream Dance Studios, which we have been successfully running for 6 years. Our roles involve teaching a range of dance styles, choreographing for events and producing our own shows. Alongside the creative work, we manage key areas of the business such as marketing, operations and student development. Our dance family has already grown so much and we are really proud of what we have achieved so far. We have so much more planned for the future of Dream Dance Studios!

How did your time at Chester prepare you for your current role/ setting up your dance company?

Studying dance at Chester equipped us with the skills to perform, choreograph and produce work, but most importantly it gave us the self-belief and confidence to pursue our own path. As the end of our time at Chester was approaching, we met with one of our lecturers to discuss running our own dance classes for children. Her encouragement played a huge part in us taking the first step, and we genuinely believe that the support and belief we received at Chester was integral in starting our own business.

Did you take part in any extracurricular activities, societies or internships?

One of our most memorable parts of our university experience was being part of the hip hop and contemporary dance societies. We performed at universities all over the country, and being part of the advanced teams allowed us to push our performance skills and confidence. Competing as a team was so much fun and we were really proud to place in most competitions. We would recommend trying out the dance societies, there are many styles to choose from and it’s a completely different experience to dancing as part of your course!
