Emily Allen
Dance BA (Hons)
"My time at Chester prepared me for my current role as I was able to understand my own body better anatomically. It showed me the importance of preparing your body for certain practices and how to aid recovery from strenuous rehearsal."
Why did you choose Chester?
I chose to study Dance at Chester because of the balance between practical and theory as well as the vast module options available. The course allowed for individuality, meaning I could tailor my experience to build on my current practice and dance theory but also explore elements of dance science and technique that challenged me and expanded my movement vocabulary and skill set.
What did you enjoy most about your course?
I really enjoyed somatic practices. It wasn’t a practice I had much experience in but it really helped me reconnect with my body and opened opportunities for the creation of new movement vocabulary outside of my usual style. There are plenty of practical elements that allow for experimenting and learning off peers on the course.
Do you have any advice for someone who is thinking of studying your subject?
Be open to experiment, challenge your mind and body but most of all, get it wrong. If you let go of pre-conceived judgement and allow your body to be curious with exploring new movement vocabulary, you’ll get the most out of the course and develop your understanding as a dancer.
How did your time at Chester prepare you for your current role?
My time at Chester prepared me for my current role as I was able to understand my own body better anatomically. It showed me the importance of preparing your body for certain practices and how to aid recovery from strenuous rehearsal. Connecting with other dancers in space and learning about their training backgrounds enhanced my understanding of the physical demands a dancer faces and how we can best support them during performances or on tour.
Did you take part in any extracurricular activities, societies, or internships while studying?
Whilst studying at Chester, I was a member of the dance society. This was great fun as it was a chance to meet new people with similar interests and a way to connect with other dancers and dance styles separate from the course. We got to experiment with different choreography and experience competitions together and it was a lovely atmosphere and addition to the course.
