"Without realising, I took the role of the Stage Manager where I organised rehearsals, worked closely with tech departments and created systems where the show could run smoothly and timely."

What is your name and what did you study?

Halle Kisby and I studied Acting BA hons

Why did you choose Chester?

I chose Chester University for the course content. I was sure I wanted a career in theatre and/or film, and Chester Acting course allowed me to gain a range of knowledge.

What did you enjoy most about your course?

The freedom to explore other roles in theatre and film that weren’t acting. Along with the art of acting, I was able to explore the process of putting together a piece and the roles of individuals who are around actors.

Do you have any advice for someone who is thinking about a career in acting

Be open and available for all opportunities, especially including ones to help fellow students as you never know who will be successful! Also, don’t focus on one aspect of your course which you think you will build a career in. Take the opportunity to see what’s around you and give everything a chance.

What graduate role have you commenced? What area(s) are you working in and what does this entail day-to-day?

Since graduating, I have taken on freelance work in Stage Management. Although sporadic timings, the work is exciting and rewarding. On a show day, my day is likely to entail of looking after props and equipment, ensuring actors/musicians are looked after, supervising lighting and sound, ensuring technical staff have understood briefs, cue calling on a show, time keeping and packing the show away. Dependent on the job, I can also be travelling a lot during a few days where I’m able to work in different venues up and down the country.

How did your time at Chester prepare you for your current role?

During the course, we put together many shows and films where organisation of them was key. Sometimes without realising, I took the role of the Stage Manager where I organised rehearsals, worked closely with tech departments and created systems where the show could run smoothly and timely.

Did you take part in any extracurricular activities, societies, or internships while studying?
In my second year, I undertook a work placement in stage management which is where I found my love for the job. The placement provided me with many contacts and industry knowledge, which I will always use for as long as I’m in my career choice. I also undertook many volunteer roles in Acting to build my profile and gain experience in auditioning.
