Niall Heaton
Acting BA (Hons)

"In my time at Chester, I learnt a wealth of camera techniques which I applied in full during my time on set professionally."
What is your name and what did you study?
My name is Niall, I was on the BA Acting course at Chester.
Why did you choose Chester?
I chose Chester because I felt it would give me a well-rounded, versatile skillset. For example, it would not just sharpen my skills as an actor, but also as a scriptwriter, director and even technician. This has enriched my experience as a creative, as well as providing me with further employable attributes.
What did you enjoy most about your course?
Being provided the opportunity to listen to industry professionals. Equity and Spotlight are necessities for any aspiring thespians. Spotlight can be a powerful tool when used effectively, so it’s good to understand how actual professionals use it to get some ideas for your own profile. I found Pam’s workshop on networking to be especially helpful! I came away from it understanding the etiquette of how to promote oneself substantially more.
Do you have any advice for someone who is thinking about a career in acting
Get as much experience as you can doing different things. For example, look for Supporting Artist gigs, or local theatre groups, because you never know who you might meet. You’ll become better acquainted with industry standards and what’s expected of you. Quite simply, keep yourself occupied.
What graduate role have you commenced? What area(s) are you working in and what does this entail day-to-day?
Just recently, I have had the privilege to work on a BBC programme, working alongside names such as: Bear Grylls, Mo Jannah & Naomi Aldwyn-Allsworth set to release early 2026. So, for now I’m looking to maintain my momentum from day-to-day in search for additional roles.
How did your time at Chester prepare you for your current role?
In my time at Chester, I learnt a wealth of camera techniques which I applied in full during my time on set professionally. Teamwork was another tenet that I found to be paramount in my time at the University of Chester.
Did you take part in any extracurricular activities, societies, or internships while studying?
I got myself involved in plays at Theatr Clwyd, my local theatre group, National Youth Theatre Wales. Even outside of dramatics, I became part of The Wilfred Owen Association, giving the civic reception on the opening day of Wilfred Owen Festival 2025. From a social standpoint, I had a great time on the university’s Rugby League team the Chester Mavericks too.
