Photography BA (Hons)
"It is an incredibly fun course, and in a world where content creation and marketing are changing, learning how to take effective photographs with good composition, with intent, and a thoughtful medium is crucial in the current employment realm."
Why did you choose Chester?
I chose Chester because I wanted to get away from the life I was already accustomed to. I live just outside London, and I could have easily picked a university within the city, but that meant I would most likely have to commute from home, which I did not want to do, as I would have preferred to move out and explore independence. However, accommodation costs were excessive and took up nearly all of my maintenance loan.
I then decided to look north, and that is when I discovered Chester, a very unique and interesting city, close to Wales, Liverpool and Manchester. The University itself was ranked well, the percentage of students who went on to employment from the course was high, the accommodation was affordable, and the room itself was lavish! Furthermore, the interview I had with my tutor was very interesting and was appreciative of my work but also gave useful advice for my ongoing A-level photography work.
What did you enjoy most about your course?
I enjoyed learning the different ways a photo can be taken, as well as the variety of aspects taught to us. Photography is a broad subject with many different subcultures. I am glad that we were taught all kinds, such as documentary, commercial, still life and portraiture. But more importantly made friends that I will stay in contact with for the rest of my life.
Do you have any advice for someone who is thinking of study Photography?
I say go for it. It is an incredibly fun course, and in a world where content creation and marketing are changing, learning how to take effective photographs with good composition, with intent, and a thoughtful medium is crucial in the current employment realm.
What graduate role have you commence? What area(s) are you working in, and what does this entail day-to-day? Or what are you aspiring to achieve and how?
I am hoping to start work as a junior-level photographer for any kind of company, as well as start my own side photography business.
How did your time at Chester prepare you for your current role or what you want to do in the future?
The University helped me develop crucial skills for employment in photography, such as technical skills, using proper editing software and how to liaise with clients, shooting to a brief and developing my own ideas.
Did you take part in any extracurricular activities, societies, or internships while studying?
I took part in many things, including the student ambassador scheme, the student photographer job, and helping to run the Photography society too.
