From Chester to Sheffield United - My Marketing Career in the Fast-Paced World of Football
Lauren shares her exciting university journey, from real world experiences to making friends, leading her into a fast-paced career as a Senior Marketing Manager at Sheffield United.

The Fast-Paced Football Environment Keeps Every Day Exciting
I enjoy the fast-paced nature of the football environment – there is an energy and urgency that keeps every day exciting and dynamic. I thrive on the variety and challenge that comes with working across multiple departments. My responsibilities extend beyond just one area: I’m involved in supporting both men’s and women’s first team football, academy football, as well as retail, ticketing, events, commercial activities, internal projects, and the community foundation.
Learning in Real Time
I studied the Digital Marketing BA Hons, a three year course that covered a range of topics spanning from campaigns, social media, digital marketing, data, finance, marketing trends and more. The course gave me a deep understanding of how modern marketing functions in dynamic markets. The breadth of study ensured I gained expertise in essential digital and innovative marketing methods, preparing me to navigate the rapidly evolving marketing landscape.
One of the standout aspects is how the lecturers consistently adapt the course content to reflect current marketing trends – ensuring we are learning what’s happening in real time across the industry. This kept the lectures engaging, relevant, and aligned with the evolving digital landscape.
Taught on a beautiful and inspiring campus, the entire experience was both professionally enriching and personally enjoyable.
Balancing Real-World Experience Alongside My Academic Learning
One of the biggest highlights of my studies was the opportunity to balance real-world experience alongside my academic learning. I was able to take on a part-time role as a Marketing Manager for a property company while studying, which not only enhanced my practical understanding of marketing, but also taught me how to manage my time effectively and maintain a healthy work, education and life balance. Another key opportunity was my work placement at Rowton Hall Hotel in Chester, where I worked as a Marketing Intern. This experience was arranged through the University of Chester, which led to a job offer at the end of the placement, giving me a valuable stepping stone into the industry.
Chester is the Perfect Place to Study
What I enjoyed most about my time in Chester was the unique character and charm of the city itself. Even during the pandemic, I was able to explore so many beautiful areas – from walks along the river and through the meadows, to strolling the historic city walls, relaxing in local parks, and discovering independent cafes and shops. Chester really suited what I was looking for in a university city; I didn’t want to study somewhere too large or overwhelming, and Chester offered the perfect balance of a welcoming community with plenty to do.
The city is steeped in history and full of personality, and its location was ideal – just a short train journey from both Manchester and Liverpool, giving me access to larger cities or to visit friends and family. I also loved the social side of university life. I made great friends and met people from all over the UK and the world, which made my experience even more memorable. On top of that, the University staff were always approachable and supportive, creating a genuinely positive and encouraging environment throughout my studies.
Meeting People From All Walks Of Life
One of my favourite memories from university is meeting people from all walks of life during my first year. The Students’ Union Bar played a big role in that – it was a great place to meet new people, get involved in events, and settle into student life. Whether it was joining societies, attending socials, or just chilling out to watch the football or rugby, the SU Bar created a welcoming atmosphere. Looking back, those first few weeks – full of introductions, shared experiences, and new connections – were some of the most exciting and memorable of my time in Chester.
Say 'Yes' to as Many Opportunities as Possible
My biggest tip for anyone considering doing a degree is to say yes to as many opportunities as possible, both personally and professionally, and to be open to stepping outside of your comfort zone. University is about more than just academics, it’s a time of personal growth, discovery, and development. Whether it’s taking on a placement, joining a society, trying a part-time job, or simply meeting new people, every experience helps share who you are and who you are becoming. Some of the most valuable lessons I learned came from pushing myself to try something new, and those moments played a huge role in shaping the path I have taken.
You Will Leave With a Wealth of Knowledge
University offers so much more than just a degree. You will leave with a wealth of knowledge and a broad skill set that will prepare you for the business world, but just as importantly, you will gain life-changing experiences along the way. University gives you the chance to meet new people from all walks of life, step into new environments, and grow both personally and professionally. It's a unique time where you can explore your interests, challenge yourself, and shape the direction for the future. The confidence, independence and perspective you gain at university are things that stay with you long after graduation.
