Public lecture explores the lived experience of functional seizures

The event will be led by Professor Paul Bissell, Pro Vice-Chancellor of Research and Innovation at the University of Chester and Dr Marian Peacock, Honorary Lecturer in Public Health at the University of Sheffield’s School of Health and Related Research. 

The lecture will take place on Wednesday, March 11 from 6pm to 7:30pm CSE016 - Cinema Room, School of Education Building, Exton Park, Parkgate Road, Chester, CH1 4BJ. 

The lecture will examine how people - predominantly women - who experience functional seizures (FS) or functional neurological disorder (FND) navigate stigma, misunderstanding and the search for medical legitimacy. 

Beginning with a historical image of Jean-Martin Charcot, a French Neurologist and Professor of Anatomical Pathology, demonstrating a ‘hysteric’ patient to medical students, the speakers will trace how similar symptoms are understood today. While modern terminology has shifted - from ‘hysteria’ to labels such as Non‑Epileptic Attack Disorder (NEAD), psychogenic seizures (PNES), dissociative seizures and now functional seizures - the social dynamics surrounding these diagnoses remain fraught. 

Paul and Marian will argue that the medical gaze continues to overlook the profound roles of gender, class, trauma and suffering in shaping these experiences. Many individuals report that a diagnosis of functional seizures feels delegitimising, especially when contrasted with the perceived security of an ‘organic’ medical explanation. Despite hopes that a clearer diagnosis might reduce stigma, people with FS often continue to face assumptions of feigning, instability or weakness. The speakers will present emerging research suggesting that pain, trauma and life events are central to understanding functional seizures, and that these experiences deserve greater recognition within clinical and social contexts.
