University is a Career Catalyst for David Shares
David graduated with an MSc in Healthcare Management in 2023 and reflects on his positive experience at Chester, as well as showing how taking your study to the next level can lead to career advancement.
Charting a New Course
I chose to study for a Master’s in Health Services Management because I wanted to build a career in healthcare administration and develop my understanding of leadership, strategic planning, and service delivery in healthcare. Coming from a pure science and communication background, I was keen to chart a new course and gain the kind of academic and practical knowledge that would prepare me to work at the intersection of healthcare provision and organisational performance. The University of Chester offered a well-structured course that aligned with my career and academic aspirations.

A Catalyst for My Career Progression
Studying this course has been a huge stepping stone in my career. It gave me the tools and confidence to work as a performance professional within the NHS, helping improve healthcare services through data-driven insights. It’s definitely been a catalyst for my career progression; what I learned in areas like leadership, project management, and commissioning are things I actively apply in my role today. The degree didn’t just open doors; it gave me the ability to step through them with confidence.
Professional Practice Made the Course Stand Out
I would absolutely recommend this degree, especially to anyone who wants to play a leadership or strategic role in healthcare organisations. The modules were relevant, thoughtfully designed, and focused on real-world application. Modules like leadership, development and change, health and social care commissioning, and managing innovation made the learning practical and transferable. There were also great opportunities to engage with professionals and make group presentations with peers, and the focus on both academic theory and professional practice made the course stand out.
A Supportive Academic Environment
One of the highlights for me was the supportive academic environment:
- The module leaders and lecturers were approachable, knowledgeable, and genuinely invested in student success.
- I also really valued being able to work alongside students from a variety of professional backgrounds and nationalities (being a program with a wide international student community), which enriched our discussions and learning.
- Beyond the classroom, being involved as a Student Ambassador and Student Voice Representative added another dimension to my experience, giving me leadership exposure and the opportunity to represent students at the program level.
Students From all Backgrounds Feel Supported and Encouraged to Grow
The University of Chester creates a community where students from all backgrounds feel supported and encouraged to grow both academically and personally. The staff are approachable, the resources are excellent, and the opportunities to get involved in university life are plentiful. It’s a place where you’re not just a student number, but your voice also matters. This can be further evidenced by the What Uni? Student Choice Awards 2025 for Student Support, Postgraduate Study, and International Study, which I think is very well deserved.
Thinking of Postgraduate Study? Here are My Tips:
If you’re thinking about postgraduate study, I’d say go for it, but be clear on your reasons and what you hope to gain. Postgraduate study is challenging but rewarding, and it’s a fantastic way to expand your professional skills and develop your thinking. My advice would be to engage fully, take advantage of extracurricular opportunities, and connect with your lecturers and peers. A PG course can open up new paths, but you have to be proactive in making the most of it. I wish you the best in your academic journey.
