Dr Gareth Nye
Senior Lecturer
Gareth is a lecturer of physiology at Chester Medical School and is programme leader for BMedSci Medical Science. Gareth has expertise in the physiology of pregnancy and specialises in maternal and fetal health particularly the condition known as fetal growth restriction. He is an active supporter of student wellbeing and also a qualified mental health first aider.
Gareth started his career in academia by studying for a BSc in Physiology at The University of Liverpool progressing through to a PhD in pathophysiology.
Gareth continued his research career at the Tommys research centre within St Marys hospital, Manchester where he investigated how and why some babies do not grow sufficiently through world leading work in placental physiology.
Gareth joined Chester in 2019 as a lecturer of physiology and is programme leader for BMedSci Medical Science. He has continued to research maternal and fetal health whilst becoming a leading figure within endocrinology with mentions in national media outlets. In addition, Gareth has sat on a number of government sessions and documents calling for greater attention for maternal health.
He remains a huge advocate for student wellbeing and is also a mental health first aider.
Gareth has extensive experience teaching on undergraduate and postgraduate physiology programmes and supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate dissertation students.
He currently teaches across all levels of study within Chester Medical School which includes teaching of both science and clinical sessions.
His broad areas of teaching include cell biology, physiology, pathophysiology/disease and clinical skills. Gareth has specific teaching interests in pregnancy biology, maternal and fetal health and endocrinology.
Gareth’s research focuses on conditions affecting the maternal and fetal environment during pregnancy and how that can influence life post pregnancy.
