What is Clearing? 

Definition:

Clearing is the UCAS process that matches applicants without a confirmed university place to institutions with available course vacancies. It runs from July to October, with peak activity on A Level Results Day (which usually lands in the last weeks of August).

You can use Clearing if you:

• didn't meet your firm or insurance offer grade or entry requirements
• didn't receive any offers in your initial application through UCAS
• declined your offers
• are applying for the first time after 30th June
• want to switch to a different course or university.

It makes total sense that the decision to attend university takes serious thought. Clearing can be a great option if you decide university is the right choice for you and you want to explore your options!

Why Clearing 2026 Matters

Recent UCAS and university sector data shows that Clearing is becoming a mainstream, proactive choice:

• 577,725 students were accepted to UK universities in 2025 – a record high, following a competitive Clearing period (Times Higher Education, 2026).
• 14-16% of University of Chester students (over the last two cycles) joined their course via Clearing. • Course availability is dynamic – Clearing isn't a rush and grab of any old course; there is a huge choice available.

Why it matters: You may find a course that suits you better than your original choices (if you applied through UCAS earlier in the year) academically, socially or geographically.

Clearing often provides alternative routes into universities that may have been out of reach earlier in the cycle.

The Clearing 2026 Process (Step‑by‑Step) 

1. Check Your UCAS Hub

Once you receive your results, log into your UCAS to see whether you're in Clearing. You'll see a "You are in Clearing" message if you're eligible.

2. Get Researching Courses

Use the UCAS website and university Clearing pages to search for vacancies – here's ours if you're curious: Clearing 2026. Courses update frequently – sometimes hourly – especially on Results Day.

3. Contact Universities Directly

Most universities, like ourselves, publish dedicated Clearing hotlines. When calling, have ready:

• Your UCAS ID
• Your grades
• A short explanation of why you're interested in the course

4. Receive a Verbal Offer

If a university is interested, they may give you a verbal offer. This is not binding until you add the course in UCAS.

5. Add Your Clearing Choice

In your UCAS Hub, select "Add Clearing Choice" and enter the course details. Once the university confirms, your place is secured – well done!
