Free public lecture on nuclear medicine to be held at University of Chester

Paul Walmsley, Section Lead for Criticality at Rolls-Royce, will give the two-hour talk, titled Nuclear Medicine for Beginners, at the University’s Binks building on the Exton Park campus off Parkgate Road at 10.30am.

This session aims to introduce the fundamentals of nuclear medicine. Core physical principles behind medical imaging techniques such as CT, PET, and MRI will be discussed, including radiation-matter interactions and signal formation. The session would also outline how radionuclides are produced, detected, and used for functional imaging and radiotherapy. It also bridges core physics concepts with real-world medical applications, highlighting the role of physics in modern healthcare.

Chartered Physicist Paul Walmsley specialises in criticality analysis of the manufacturing processes, transport, and commissioning of reactor cores, as well as spent fuel management.

The University event, which will be followed by a Q&A session, is part of the Physics Student Seminar Series, sponsored by the Institute of Physics, the professional body of physicists in the UK, via the Merseyside branch. Free coffee, tea and cookies will be provided for attendees.
