Libby pursues a career she is truly excited about and praises her Maths degree
Recent alumna, Libby shares her positive experience of studying Mathematics at Chester

An Interactive and Positive experience
My experience as a mathematics student at the University of Chester was nothing but positive. The course was both fascinating and challenging, and the smaller class sizes and the supportive lecturers made learning as enjoyable and rewarding as possible. I really enjoyed how interactive the course was and the lecturers were always available to answer questions—which I had plenty of!—and provided great guidance and encouragement to help tackle any problem.
A Foundation for the Future
One of the things I appreciated most about the course was its great selection of modules, covering a wide range of mathematical topics. From statistics and stochastic processes—which I’m now studying further in my masters—to linear algebra, pure mathematics, and so much more, the degree provided an extremely strong foundation. This broad knowledge base has been incredibly valuable and has given me the skills to pursue a range of exciting opportunities.
Work Experience for my Career
Beyond my studies, the university also played a key role in shaping my career path. During my second year, I completed a placement module where I spent 150 hours as an accounting assistant, gaining great work experience. After graduating, I had the incredible opportunity to undertake a graduate internship in Chester, which I found through the university’s careers hub. This led to nine weeks of experience as an insurance pricing analyst for an actuarial tech consultancy, an opportunity made possible by my degree at Chester and the strong industry connections the university had established.
After Graduating – What is Next?
Since graduating, so many doors have opened for me. I’m currently pursuing a masters in Actuarial Science at Queen’s University Belfast, and in September, I’ll be moving to Edinburgh to begin my career as a trainee actuary with one of the UK’s largest retirement companies. As I work towards becoming an actuary, my degree from Chester has been incredibly valuable, as so much of the mathematics I use now is already familiar to me. It’s been exciting to take that foundation and learn new ways to apply it in the actuarial field. Looking back, my time at Chester gave me not only the technical knowledge but also the confidence and opportunities to pursue a career I’m truly excited about.
