My Experience as an International Student Studying Business at Chester
Master's student Maryam shares her University of Chester journey and how studying at Chester helped shape her academic growth, personal confidence and future aspirations in global business.
My name is Maryam. I am from Pakistan, and I am an MSc International Business student at the University of Chester. My philosophical introduction is: "I was a learner, I am a learner, and I will be a learner.”
My Background
My journey to the UK reflects resilience, ambition and a deep commitment to learning. Coming from a humble background where, for many women, studying abroad remains an aspiration rather than a reality, I chose to challenge that narrative.
My academic path has been unconventional. I previously completed a Master’s in Zoology and later prepared for Pakistan’s civil services, a journey that immersed me in international relations, philosophy, politics and history. Although I did not pursue that path further, it transformed the way I think.
Combined with my professional experience in marketing at JazzCash, and my exposure to business studies at LUMS, I developed a strong foundation that naturally led me to international business – a field where strategy, people and global vision come together.
My Experience at the University of Chester
At the University of Chester, the foundation I had evolved into clarity and confidence. From my very first interaction, I felt I was in an environment that recognised potential.
The staff provided me with extended support beyond teaching; they gave me the opportunity to act as a class assistant during a coaching session and acknowledged my contribution via LinkedIn, which was a defining moment in my academic journey. My course leader instilled a mindset that continues to guide me: “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.”
Other academics on my course further strengthened my confidence by recognising my perspective and intellectual curiosity. Beyond the classroom, my experience as a Class Representative and the consistent support from University staff, including the library team, reinforced a sense of belonging.
What stands out most about Chester is not just the quality of teaching but the way individuals are seen, encouraged and elevated.
A New Attitude
My year studying at Chester has been transformative. It has shaped not only my academic direction, but also my sense of identity. I now see myself as a confident, emerging leader with a clear voice and purpose.
As a business student specialising in international business and working on a marketing-focused dissertation, I have developed a deeper understanding of how modern economies function, particularly in the digital space. My research explores user empowerment within the attention economy – how individuals can recognise and leverage the value of their attention in an increasingly digital world.
Outside of My Studies
Living in Chester has provided me with the space to reflect, grow and think strategically about my future. Alongside my academic work, I continue to write Urdu stories and poetry, and I remain committed to causes such as climate awareness and women’s empowerment. I believe leadership begins with awareness and responsibility, and I aspire to contribute meaningfully to global business and digital strategy.
My Advice to Future International Students
My advice to prospective international students is simple: come with vision, remain open to transformation and value the journey – because at the University of Chester, growth is not just expected, it is experienced.
