Students’ creative posters on display at Chester Christmas Market
Creative posters capturing the magic and character of the festive season in Chester have gone on display at the city centre’s Christmas Market.
The University of Chester’s BA (Hons) Graphic Design students from the School for the Creative Industries were tasked with coming up with vibrant designs which would be showcased at the market’s chalets in the run-up to Christmas.
The project was led by the University’s Graphic Design Course Leader Dr Janey Deng Klingelfuss, organised by Marketing Cheshire’s Creative and Content Lead Jon Robinson as part of a collaboration between the two organisations.
Winning students Hiba Zahir, Izzy Millet, and Marlena Ankers were selected for their outstanding creative interpretations of the theme ‘Christmas in Chester’, reflecting the city’s festive atmosphere, heritage, and community spirit.
Since then, thousands of visitors have now had the chance to see the winning designs, which have been professionally displayed on the backs of several chalets through the Chester Christmas Market, which is run and promoted by the region’s tourism body, Marketing Cheshire. As a further reward, the three students have each received Chester Gift Cards, courtesy of Chester BID.
Dr Janey Deng Klingelfuss said: “We’re excited to continue building connections with the city and local communities – providing students with networking opportunities, portfolio conversations, and insights into future careers.”

Associate Professor Bernadine Murray, Head of School for the Creative Industries, added: “This collaboration is a fantastic example of how creative education extends beyond the campus. By working with partners such as Marketing Cheshire, our students gain real-world experience responding to professional briefs while building networks that support future careers. At the same time, projects like this strengthen the cultural fabric of our city, connecting education, creativity, and community in a way that benefits everyone.
“We are proud to champion opportunities that prepare graduates for industry while enriching Chester’s vibrant identity.”
Jon Robinson said: “This festive season, we wanted to give young designers the chance to showcase their creativity in a public forum, and what could be more public than Chester’s fabulous Christmas Market? It’s been wonderful to see emerging designers share their vision of our city at its most magical time of year!”
Marlena Ankers added: “Seeing my artwork displayed on Northgate Street as part of the Chester Christmas Artwork Showcase has been a truly powerful moment in my creative journey. Having my work recognised and shared within such a prominent public space reinforces everything I believe about the role of design in storytelling, connection and community.
“It is a proud milestone that reflects both creative dedication and the value of visual communication in shaping the city’s seasonal identity. I am grateful to the University of Chester and Marketing Cheshire for providing this opportunity and for supporting emerging creative voices. A memorable way to contribute to Chester’s cultural landscape during such a special time of year.”
The festive designs are on display until the conclusion of the Christmas Market on December 22.
