University student Alex creates superb new mural at Chester Racecourse

The Garden bar at the iconic venue has received a magnificent new mural, after the University of Chester was commissioned to create the artwork.

Course Leader for Fine Art and Senior Lecturer Dr Jeremy Turner set up the project, working in conjunction with current student Alex Thompson, to create the race-themed floral artwork.

Alex, who will progress to her second year of study in October, has been central in working up designs, putting together costings and painting the work which measures a substantial nine by two metres. She used the flowers found in the garden as inspiration for her piece, bringing the surrounding area of Chester to life in her mural.

She said: “Doing commissions like this challenges me to paint things I’ve never painted before; it expands my skillsets.

“I started by graffitiing and there’s a lot of stigma attached to that, which is why I’ve enjoyed being able to paint in my own style with murals like this, to a wide audience. I can help break down that stigma and create something I’m proud of that the client likes.”

Dr Jeremy Turner said: “It’s been a real pleasure and an exciting opportunity for the Fine Art course at Chester to work with Chester Racecourse in the proposal, development and execution of a mural in The Garden private bar area.

“Her professional and ambitious approach to this project exemplifies the opportunities that are available to Fine Art students, and indeed graduates, to compliment, enhance and validate the experience of their course of study.”
