Carbon Literacy Training
The University delivers Carbon Literacy training to staff and students internally. The training is led by the sustainability team, who co-deliver it with trained staff and student facilitators from across the University. Carbon Literacy training plays a key role in building a low carbon culture, as it empowers students and staff to take positive individual and collective climate action in their lives, at the University, and beyond.
Carbon Literacy training is embedded in teaching as part of existing modules in some degree programmes. Students who do not have Carbon Literacy as part of their course, along with staff, can access the training through regular sessions offered by the University’s sustainability team throughout the academic year.
University of Chester is a Bronze Carbon Literate Educator (CLE), in recognition of its substantial understanding of, commitment to and experience with Carbon Literacy. The University was awarded this prestigious credential in 2025, positioning it alongside leading institutions in climate education.
Education for Sustainability
The University of Chester is committed to ensuring its students understand how local and global sustainability challenges will shape their personal and professional futures. Building on wide ranging exemplars of good practice from across the institution, we are working towards embedding Education for Sustainability (EfS) in all undergraduate courses by 2030. Academic staff are supported to develop course-appropriate EfS learning and assessment by sharing good practice via a dedicated special interest group of our University-wide learning community, TLInnovate. Students and staff also have access to formal Carbon Literacy training to further support their EfS learning.
