Synopsis
This session examines the pressures on the NHS, focusing on developments in England, and covering the legacy of the pandemic, 14 years of austerity under successive Conservative governments, and the recent reforms announced by the Labour government, including its 10 Year Health Plan, which, far from transforming the NHS, appears to represent a 'back to the future' approach. Students will explore the challenges of implementing policy in complex, politically scrutinised systems like the NHS. Key topics include: tackling waiting lists; Integrated Care Systems, and a place-based approach to health and wellbeing; collaboration with local government to address health inequalities, improve population health, and tackle the problems facing social care; and is choice and competition in health care the solution to the NHS's problems.
