The benefits of a degree in Zoology and Animal Science at University of Chester: Beyond the Classroom
Hear about final year student Bethany's exciting Experiential Learning Module in the Phillipines and her other reasons to choose Chester to study a Zoology and Animal Science related degree.
Hi, my name is Bethany, I'm in my 3rd year at Chester. I am passionate about animals and how we can make a difference for them in captivity and the wild. That’s why choosing the right university was important to me, as is for many other students. I wanted a university that provided me the opportunity to learn and not just from inside a classroom, and that’s what I got from Chester.
Experiential Learning Module in the Philippines
One of the modules you’ll be able to choose in your 2nd year is experiential learning, and that’s exactly what I did; it was one of the best decisions I’d ever made. We went to the Philippines, to an island called Cebu. We were able to delve into field research about corals and marine life. Experience what a future career in Marine Biology could be. We were given training beforehand in the Exton Park pool on how to use snorkels, fins, the transect lines, hand signals and dip diving. We used transects to study what species of coral, fish, and invertebrates there were in different parts of coral reefs and see how colourful and biodiverse they were. We were also able to witness how marine wildlife behaviourally acted with their environment, just reading papers definitely doesn’t do it justice.
There were two things that will always stick with me from this trip. One of them is seeing how coral reefs can and have been affected by storms and how they can be destroyed to the point of no return, with no thriving schools of fish or marine invertebrates. That’s why I chose this course, in hopes of one day being able to help restore habitats and biodiversity, and improve wild animal welfare globally.
Another moment is seeing Whale Sharks, in the flesh and swimming in front of my eyes. I couldn’t believe it. Being able to see an endangered species was an incredible experience, one you would never experience just sitting in a classroom looking at pictures. I did cry afterwards, but it strengthened my resolve to help and educate the public about endangered species, something I also do as a volunteer for Chester Zoo, which I was able to obtain through the University of Chester.
