What I wish I'd known before starting university
Check out some of the key things our current students wish they'd known before they started at the University.
To help you prepare for your first term at the University of Chester, some of our current students have shared a few of things they wish they'd known before they started their studies.
It's OK if you don't make friends straight away
The truth is; friendships take time to build and most students haven't found their new best friends by the end of Welcome Week. There's no rush to find your people - you've got loads of opportunities throughout your course, so please don't panic.
You don't have to drink
Drinking alcohol isn't an essential part of student life. In fact, most of our university-run events are actually alcohol-free - plus lots of clubs and societies also do sober socials too!
Your attendance is monitored
It's mandatory to check into lectures so the University can monitor your attendance. If your attendance drops too low, our support teams will reach out to check if everything's OK or if you need some extra help and support.
You can learn a new language for free
Every year we offer a range of free part-time evening language taster courses which are open to all students. From Mandarin and French to Portuguese and Welsh, there's something for everyone.
We have more than one university site
It's normal to want to only visit your site of study - but we actually have six different sites (four in Chester, one in Warrington and one in Birkenhead). Each has its own library and study spaces and they're open to all students - so they're always an option if you fancy a change of scenery.
You don't need to overpack
We know it can be tempting to bring your entire wardrobe (particularly with the British weather!), but try not to overpack when you first arrive. Our sites are surrounded by shops (including charity shops) so it's easy to pick up any extras. And don't forget - you can always swap clothes around when you return home for the holidays!
You can join a club or society later in the year
Although it can be tempting to join a sports club/team or society as soon as you begin, it's definitely not essential. You have the option of holding back and joining later in the year. Most clubs and societies offer free taster sessions - so take advantage, and make sure you're signing up to the ones which suit you best.
You need to do the reading on your course
Most courses have reading lists for a reason. Yes, they might feel overwhelming or a bit dry at times, but if you do the recommended reading on your course, it'll give you a much better understanding of your subject which can prove invaluable when it's time to do assignments.
You can access free counselling sessions
Through our free Student Assistance Programme (SAP), you can access up to six free counselling sessions per topic per year - these can be in-person, over the phone or via video call. You can call the helpline on 0800 028 3766 to request this support.
