Ben Broughton

Biography

Associate Professor Ben Broughton is Head of the Communication, Screen and Performance Division at the University of Chester. He has worked at the University since 1998, introducing Popular Music into the degree portfolio in 2005. Ben is an accomplished session musician and sound engineer with 35 years experience in these fields. In 2004, with his brother Joe Broughton (BEM), Ben headlined the Hong Kong International Folk Festival. Ben continues to sing, play bass, guitar and harmonica nationally and internationally, and is a sought after sound engineer for both live and recording sessions.

Teaching and Supervision

Ben is a live sound specialist for music performance and teaches PA with analogue and digital desks to both the performance and production students. He also teaches in the recording studio, looking at session musicianship and recording techniques. Over the past 25 years, he has taught huge a range of music and theatre performance, performance technology, interactivity, collaborative practice, sound and video editing, and all manner of software.

Research and Knowledge Exchange

Ben's research interests are mainly focussed around collaborative practice within performance and composition. He has recorded several albums of his own music, and is also actively engaged in research into the progression of live sound engineering through digital technology.
