Study shows students find ChatGPT helpful while raising concerns over how it is used

University researchers Dr Astrid Schepman and Dr Paul Rodway from the Division of Psychology were part of the recently published global research study, Higher Education Students’ Perceptions of ChatGPT: A Global Study of Early Reactions, published in open-access journal PLOS One.  

With insights from 23,218 students across 109 countries, including students from the University of Chester, this study presents the most comprehensive global analysis to date on how higher education students perceive and use ChatGPT in its early days, as published in peer-reviewed academic journals. The anonymous survey took place between October 2023 and February 2024, about one year after ChatGPT was first released to the public. 

Key findings from the project found students use ChatGPT primarily for brainstorming, summarising, and research, and it simplifies complex concepts but is seen as less reliable for traditional learning. Students also agreed that concerns over cheating, plagiarism, and social isolation fuelled the need for AI regulations. 

Overall, students felt positive emotions when using ChatGPT, with curiosity and calmness being the most common reactions. They believe ChatGPT is reshaping digital skills and study efficiency, yet has limitations in critical thinking and interpersonal skills.  

Associate Professor Dr Astrid Schepman said: “Building on our previous research on AI attitudes and AI in education, it has been fascinating to be part of such a large study, and to collaborate with researchers from across the globe. The study contains a wealth of data, and provides valuable insights for educators and policy makers.”
